My
brother Steve let me play his drums when I was 10, and I have never
looked back. I got a music degree at Drake in 1976, and played
gigs 6 nights a week my senior year. Including my college years, I
have played in concert bands, symphony orchestras, percussion ensembles,
big bands, country bands, rock bands, a funk band or two, and more jazz
trios and quartets than I can count, including the John Lewis Trio (with
Susie Miget), the Jim Oatts quartet, the Scott Davis Quintet, and a fine
country/rock/rhythm and blues band called Borderline, and also a good
club band called Hip Pocket. As you can see, I came to the blues
late, but ready to play. I consider my single biggest
accomplishment to be having tolerated working with Vern Hansen for
over 26 years. What was I thinking?
